Re-used Inspiration

This last weekend I was excited to start exploring re-used materials for renovating the new space.  We went to "Build It Green" (BIG) in both Gowanus and Astoria.  BIG re-sells donated new and used construction materials.  There's an interesting variety, from wood planks to full kitchens.  This would be an exciting source for greening our space because we get to reduce our environmental footprint and could potentially obtain LEED certification credits.  Rick recently took a work-related class in LEED certification, which may come in handy for our own space.

One kitchen we saw at the Gowanus BIG was gorgeous and a source of inspiration!  We liked the island because it would allow us to enjoy the loft space while we cook.  The stainless steel topped island had both the sink and the cooktop.

The upraised bar wrapped around two sides of the island, which would allow us to chat with our guests during meal prep.  Several drawers packed in the island all rolled so smoothly.

We were thinking that the side cabinets would be mounted on the wall as bottom counters.

The features included drawers with options for composting or recycling in compartments like this.

A built in sink with a seamless interface to the counter would keep the space clean.

And a suspended stainless steel and glass exhaust hood completes the picture!

We plan to visit BIG frequently for ideas and hope to get lucky with re-usable materials that work with our renovation.  We liked BIG so much, I've added their link to our "inspiration and reference" sidebar.
